Why More Adelaide Homes Are Ditching Gas

Gas Leaks Are a Real Risk

Old ovens and cooktops can leak over time. Even a small leak can be dangerous — especially in older homes. Switching to electric removes that risk completely.

Stop Paying Gas Supply Fees

Even if you barely use gas, you’re probably paying around $80–$100 per quarter just to keep it connected. That’s up to $350 a year in supply charges alone — gone the moment you disconnect.

Got Solar? Make It Work for You

Electric cooking pairs perfectly with solar panels. Instead of paying for gas, cook using your own free, clean energy. Induction is especially efficient, fast, and responsive — a favourite among chefs.

Possible Government Rebates

Some councils and state initiatives offer incentives for removing gas and going all-electric. We’ll let you know if your area qualifies and help guide you through the rebate process.

Induction vs Gas Cooktops – What’s Better?

Speed & Efficiency

  • Induction: Heats pots and pans directly using electromagnetic energy, which means water boils faster and food cooks quicker.

  • Gas: Heats the area around the pan, wasting more energy and taking longer to cook.

Result: Induction is usually around 2x faster than gas.

Energy Efficiency

Induction: Around 85–90% of energy goes into cooking.

Gas: Only about 40–50% is used — the rest is lost as heat around the burner.

Result: Induction is more efficient and cheaper to run, especially with solar.

Safety

Induction: No open flames. The cooktop surface stays cool (only the pot heats up). Automatically shuts off when the pot is removed.

Gas: Open flame, hot surfaces, and potential for gas leaks or fire.

Result: Induction is much safer, especially for families or older users.

Easy Cleaning

Induction: Flat glass surface = quick wipe-down. No grates or burners to remove.

Gas: Messy grates and burner caps trap spills, hard to clean.

Result: Induction wins for low-maintenance kitchens.

What Makes Switch Electrical Different?

At Switch Electrical, we’ve specialised in kitchen appliance installations for over 7 years, working as the preferred electricians for The Good Guys across Adelaide.

When it comes to gas to electric conversions, we handle everything:

✅ We organise both a licensed gasfitter and electrician

✅ They arrive together – no separate bookings, no back-and-forth

✅ We remove your old gas appliance and install the new electric one in one smooth visit

✅ Fully insured, fully compliant, and stress-free from start to finish

You don’t have to lift a finger — we make the whole process simple.

  • Yes. You legally need a licensed gasfitter to disconnect and cap the gas line, and a licensed electrician to install the new cooktop and run any required cabling. At Switch Electrical, we organise both trades for you and they arrive together in a single visit. No separate bookings, no chasing multiple contractors.

  • Absolutely. You don't have to ditch gas entirely — many of our customers simply remove gas from the kitchen while keeping their gas hot water system running. If you do want to go fully electric down the track, we can advise on that too.

  • In most cases the whole conversion is completed in a single visit of 2–4 hours. This covers disconnecting the gas, capping the line, running the electrical circuit, and installing your new cooktop.

  • Every job is different depending on your switchboard, the distance of the cable run, and the house itself. Check out our How Much Does It Cost? page for a breakdown, or give Luke a call on 0411 864 098 for a free quote.

  • If your new cooktop is larger than the existing cutout, the benchtop will need to be modified. For timber benches we can take care of that ourselves on the same day. For stone or granite benchtops we organise a stonemason to cut it to size — so either way, it's all handled for you without needing to find extra trades yourself.
